The Marriage Allowance: £252 you might be missing

3 min read

The Marriage Allowance lets a lower-earning spouse or civil partner transfer £1,260 of their personal allowance to their partner, saving up to £252 in tax each year.

Who qualifies

  • You're married or in a civil partnership.
  • One of you earns below the personal allowance (£12,570).
  • The other is a basic-rate taxpayer (earning between £12,570 and £50,270).

How to claim

Apply on gov.uk in about five minutes. You can backdate the claim by four tax years, which can add up to over £1,000 in one go.

Watch-outs

If the higher earner tips into the higher-rate band, the allowance is withdrawn. And if you divorce or your spouse dies, you may need to cancel or transfer the claim.

Small thing, easy to do, easy to miss.
